DELANEY, THORP, PRUITT, LISTER & BULLOCK WIN BIG
By Bruce Crowley

Elko, NV…Veteran driver Jimmy Delaney won his second feature race this season at Summit Raceway, as he grabbed the 30-lap IMCA Modified during Saturday night racing events. Plagued by engine problems in the early stages of the new season, Delaney was ready for bear on Saturday. Starting 18th, and last place, on the grid, the 32-year old Winnemucca ace was in the right time at the right time on the 13th go-a-round, when the leader of the race gave him an early Christmas present. That was when former three-time track champion Corey Steensen developed engine woes and ducked into the pit area, after leading the event for 10-laps. Steensen returned to the race but decided to park his car for the remainder of the night. Up to that point, Steensen, Nevada point leader Chad Farstveet and early race leader Ray Thompson were involved in a tight race. In fact, Farstveet and Thompson looped out in turn 3-4 to cause a yellow flag to fly on lap 11, turning second place over to Mr. Delaney, thank you very much. Delaney put the hammer down on the restart, as Wells driver Steve Pruitt and The Ryndon Rocket Joe Rigsby resumed the chase for the lead. Pruitt, who won an earlier Dash-for-cash race, looked smooth over the final 20 laps, although opening night winner Wade Taylor of Elko beat him out for second. After Delaney, Taylor and Pruitt at the checkered it was Winnemucca’s Cory Sample, who started the feature as the track point leader.

Delaney won his first race here this season two weeks ago, however it was not in the Modified car, but, rather he stepped in for team mate Dave Jenkins in his Pro Stock.

Jenkins was a no show again this past Saturday but defending Pro Stock champion Brian Thorp did. The Spring Creek ace led from the get go in the feature, even though George Quintana ran away from the field. Quintana, a winner two weeks ago, was able to run then, although he had replace a part to be able to race this past week; he did not, but was able to run without points and prize winning. Thorp was the winner, his fourth on the circuit this year. Terry Lister finished in the runner-up spot, while Marnie Thorp was third. Elko’s John Levie won the heat race, his first outing of the season.

Two weeks ago, defending Mini Mod champion Mike Fietzek won both feature races in the division, but Dennis Pruitt was trying to get close enough to him in each of those races to try to pass. Pruitt retired early in both, one with overheating problems and another malfunction in the other. This past Saturday it was all good for Dennis. The Lamoille driver put it all together, as he recorded a wire-to-wire victory over Fietzek. No one else came close to Pruitt during his 20-lap route. Third went to Jack Hammond and Lee Bosch was fourth; Fietzek captured the earlier heat race.

During the opening weekend races, Elko’s Geoffrey Bullock won his first feature in the Gen-X class; he must have like it so much, that he repeated it Saturday. Defending champion Teri Kellum ran out of laps chasing the young man, but settled for second place. Third was Cody Maier, while Shalynn Guthrie finished in the four spot. Kellum picked-up the heat race win. In the Pure Stocks, Spring Creek teen-ager James Lister has now two feature victories in a row, as he beat Bernie Sethaler and Dustin Greenwood to the checkered flag.

The next race here at Summit will be Saturday night May 26 at 6:30 p.m.
