FARSTVEET, JENKINS, PRUITT, LISTER, ROCHE WIN BIG
By Bruce Crowley

Elko, NV…The leading IMCA Modified driver in the state of Nevada Chad Farstveet extended his point lead Saturday night, as the Winnemucca driver led only two laps of the 30-lap feature race, but it was the last two laps. The 32-year old standout captured his first ever feature at Elko’s Summit Raceway at the expense of another local driver Mitch Green, who had led laps 23 to 28, until he bobbled enough to let Farstveet take the lead away with only two to go. Previously, Green took advantage of Elko veteran Dan Basanez’s mistake in turn four during the 23rd circuit to gain the lead. Basanez had led 22 out of the first 23 laps, before Green took control of the situation. Farstveet was never far from the lead during the event, so he was able to put pressure on Green, but the leader rebuked all of Farstveet’s advances for the lead, until that bobble with two remaining. It was Farstveet’s sixth victory this season at Nevada tracks, But it was his first ever feature victory at Summit after three seasons of competition here. The race had been caution free for more than half of the 30-lap even, but when it rains, it pours. The first 14-laps saw Basanez run away from everybody on the track, after taking the lead on the second lap from Jimmy Lester and Joe Rigsby; that is, until those yellow flags appeared. Track point leader Wade Taylor lost seven points to Farstveet and is now only one point head of the charging driver. Rigsby caused a late yellow as his modified drove halfway to the stars in the hill in turn two, and Cory Sample’s car was turned into a demolition derby car for another yellow. So went the second half of the race.

Dave Jenkins took only five circuits to gain the lead over leader Marnie Thorp in the Pro Stock feature race, as the Winnemucca ace won his first feature of the season. Terry Lister was the runner-up and Marnie Thorp finished third, and George Quintana’s problems continued as a balking engine was the name of his song. Quintana wasn’t the only one with problems, but at least he got his problems solved. Defending champion Brian Thorp heard distress sounds from his engine during the heat race, and decided that it wasn’t worth risking an engine for a race, so he withdrew from both the heat and the feature. Quintana won the heat over Jenkins. With Lister finishing second in the feature, he now is the new point leader..

Once Dennis Pruitt figured out how to get get his Mini Mod running without overheating, the Lamoille start has turned into a runaway train. The young man won again Saturday night , his second in successive outings here. Winnemucca’s Lee Bosch was nearly three quarters of a lap behind him in second. Point leader Mike Fietzek was third. Pruitt also won the heat race.

Elko’s Tanner Roche turned in a nifty flag to flag win in the Gen-X feature race, beating Geoffrey Bullock and defending champion Teri Kellum. Cody Maier beat Roche in the heat.

Spring Creek sensation James Lister picked up his third Pure Stock feature race out of the four contested so far this season. Veteran driver Bernie Sethaler chased the teenager to the checkered flag.

Next races at Summit Raceway will be a joint point doubleheader set for the weekend of Friday June 8 and Saturday June 9, with both nights starting at 6:30 p.m.
