| FITZ,
QUINTANA, FIETZEK, MAIER, & LISTER POST WINS |
|
By Bruce Crowley
Elko, Nevada…Some old favorites
won the feature races last Saturday night at Summit Raceway, but two of the
‘young lions’ roared to their first feature success also. 17-year old Cody
Maier stopped the six-race win skein of Gen-X division point leader Teri
Kellum, with some assistance of Kellum’s shredded tire, with two laps
remaining. At the start of the Gen-X feature, Maier took advantage of his
outside front row start to forge a lengthy lead over Kellum, who started
right behind him. Maier led for eight circuits before Kellum raced under
Cody in turn four to gain the lead. Kellum appeared on her way to her ninth
victory of the season, but a tire went down on her machine during the 12th
lap, allowing Maier to close fast. Kellum tried to continue but to no avail,
as Cody regained the number one position on lap 13. Kellum retired to the
pit area on the next go around. One lap later, Maier raced to Lincoln
Litchfield’s checkered flag to record his first feature win at Summit
Raceway. This was his second victory over Kellum this season, as he beat the
young lady on July 2 at Battle Mountain Raceway. Second place went to
15-year old rookie driver Geoffrey Bullock, third went to Dustin Greenwood,
and fourth went to another rookie Sarah Forsberg. Kellum finished fifth.
Maier also won the heat race over Kellum for a ‘mini sweep’.
James Lister picked the right
time to take over the controls of his dad’s Pure Stock car. Terry Lister was
the point leader of the new division but was convinced to let James “to
borrow the car Saturday night”. In the feature, Lister took the lead during
the third lap from Bruce Fisher and was never headed on the way to the
checkered flag 12 circuits later. James also turned in a ‘mini sweep’ as he
won the heat over Valerie McLeod. McLeod also was the runner-up in the
feature.
In Modified Mini action, Mike
Fietzek did what Teri Kellum couldn’t accomplish earlier, as he won for the
seventh time in a row. The 2002 champion led wire-to-wire in the 20-lap
feature as he was in charge. Former Gen-X champ Jay McLeod and Lee Bosch
tried to challenge him but Fietzek had too much for them on this night.
Bosch settled for second, while McLeod was third, although Bosch was
victorious in the heat race ahead of Fietzek. Fietzek won the trophy dash.
George Quintana won his ever Pro
Stock feature race here on July 8 and he must have liked it as he hasn’t
tasted defeat since. Quintana won his third in a row Saturday night from
ninth starting. The second year driver took the lead away from Terry Lister
as the leader tangled Dave Jenkins during the fourth circuit. After that,
Quintana was invincible. Cliff Hagan’s challenge of the leader was not
enough as Quintana ran a very smooth race. Hagan had to settle for second,
with Lister in third. Point leader Brian Thorp was fourth. By winning his
heat race, Quintana also had a mini sweep.
Las Vegas standout Dan
Fitzgerald needed a win to stay competitive in the IMCA National point race,
and he did. The math teacher has now has a run of three wins, one each at
Battle Mountain, Winnemucca, and here at Summit. With this victory, Dan
picked up three valuable points in his quest for the title. Rookie Cory
Sample led the first three laps until Keith Greenwood took over, with Sample
slipping to third behind Ray Thompson. Meanwhile, Fitzgerald raced into
fourth. Greenwood led until a yellow flag went out on lap 8, putting the
two-time Western Region champion right behind Greenwood’s bumper. As the
green wave once again, the champ went low in turn one under Greenwood, and
left turn two with the lead. Both Greenwood and Thompson ran great despite
some challenges by Chad Farstveet and Scott Steensen. Fitzgerald may have
returned to his early season form, when he reeled off 10 features in
successive races throughout northern Nevada. The champ checked out early in
this one. Second went to Greenwood, third to Thompson, fourth to Steensen,
and fifth went to Joe Rigsby. Finishing third on the track was Jimmy
Delaney, but he was a ‘down’ car, and finished sixth. As was most of the
races Saturday night, Fitzgerald chimed in with another mini sweep, as
coupled his win in the heat with the feature win. The win was his sixth here
and 23rd overall this season.
The next race at Summit Raceway will be on
Saturday night August 19. |
