Elko, NV…Wrong Way Corrigan had nothing on local stock
car driver Brian Thorp. Corrigan, who was a pilot decades ago, landed at the
wrong airfield. Thorp did one better Saturday night at Summit Raceway. While
pursuing current point leader George Quintana for the lead in the Pro stock
main event, he was finally able to close the gap on the final lap when
Quintana quickly lost air pressure in his right rear tire. To the delight of
the crowd, the two rounded turn 3 neck-and-neck, with Thorp on the outside.
A second victory in as many races looked within Thorp’s grasp, when Quintana
suddenly veered into him, spinning Thorp’s Camaro around 180 degrees, mere
yards from the finish. As Quintana tried to regain the lead, he nudged Thorp
under the checkered flag, giving Thorp the win by a tail as the crowd
roared. Quintana finished second, Marnie Thorp third, and Bernie Sethaler
fourth. As a result, Thorp picked up one point on Quintana for the quest for
the track championship. The earlier heat race was won by Quintana, and John
Levi took the trophy dash.
In Pure stock competition, Spring Creek teen James
Lister led the entire feature, from the green flag until the checkered…
almost. Lister had to slow down slightly for a lapped car ahead of him,
allowing Dustin Greenwood to wedge his way between the two. The drivers went
three wide through turn three, with Greenwood emerging victorious, marking
his third win of the season. By winning, Greenwood increases his lead to
four points over Sethaler in this division. Second went to Lister, with Jay
McLeod finishing third and Valerie McLeod fourth. The heat race was won by
Lister.
It was all Elko’s Cody Maier in the Gen-X division, as
he won his heat race and also led 19 out of 20 laps of the feature. He took
the lead from Neil Wadford on the second circuit of the main event and never
looked back. For Maier, it was only his second feature win this season at
Summit, although he did win at both Battle Mountain Raceway and Winnemucca
Regional Raceway earlier this year. Runner up in the feature was Wadford,
with point leader Geoffrey Bullock finishing third. Heat races were won by
Maier and Wadford. Bullock still has a 14- point advantage over Maier, with
only four races remaining.
Lamoille’s Dennis Pruitt continued his winning ways in
Mini Modified action, sweeping the heat and main event. He led all 20 laps
of the feature over defending champion Mike Fietzek, winning by a commanding
half lap lead. Fietzek and Lee Bosch now trail Pruitt by four points and 11
points, respectively.
Nevada IMCA point leader Chad Farstveet from
Winnemucca won his second feature in as many days Saturday night as he beat
Summit Raceway point leader Wade Taylor in the feature race. From his third
row inside starting position, Farstveet mowed through the twelve car field.
It took him only six laps to pass early leaders Jimmy Lester and Winnemucca
point leader Cory Sample, and after that, it was “Katie bar the door”. Going
into the feature, Taylor was leading Farstveet by 17 points for the track
crown. The two started side by side at the beginning of the main event, and
after just 12 laps, Taylor was right behind the leader. On lap 16, a yellow
was out for a clash between Taylor and Sample, relegating Sample to the pit
area, and sending Taylor to the rear of the field. The beneficiary of the
yellow was Cliff Hagan, who was now in second following Farstveet. After the
restart, Taylor was on the move once again. With 10 to go in the race,
Taylor trailed only Farstveet, Dan Basanez, and Hagan. Using a bonsai move,
he passed both Hagan and Basanez on the 21st go-around. With only
five cars on the track, the race was shortened by four laps as Farstveet won
his second race of the weekend. Second was Taylor, followed by Basanez,
Hagan, James McCoy, Ray Thompson, and IMCA Rookie of the Year point leader
Tracy Greenwood. Heat races were won by Taylor and Sample. Pro stock driver
George Quintana debuted his new IMCA modified and is working the bugs out
before being competitive.
PIT NOTES: Only two more weekends of racing remain at
Summit Raceway: Friday and Saturday, August 31 and September 1, and the
annual Gold Rush, which ends the season on Friday and Saturday, September 21
and 22. The races in Winnemucca will end this Friday, August 24, while 4
races remain in Battle Mountain: August 25, September 8, and the annual
Silver Cup, September 14 and 15.
