and Teri Kellum Elko, NV…Lamoille Mini Mod
star Dennis Pruitt won his seventh feature victory in a row this past
weekend, and number eight this season overall in ECAR Mini Mod action, as
the current point leader was awesome on Friday. With only two races remain
in the track’s season schedule, defending champion Mike Fietzek was a mere
five points behind Pruitt after the first race of the weekend doubleheader.
The way ECAR has set up their championship point structure, Fietzek, or
Pruitt for that matter, needs to only finish six positions ahead of Pruitt
in the final weekend on September 21 & 22 to be the new champion. Fietzek
took the early lead on Friday, but Pruitt took command on the fifth circuit
and never looked back. However, Saturday night was a different ballgame.
Fietzek won that one, his second of the season. The real story was an
apparent blown engine by Pruitt, thus putting both drivers into a flat out
tie with two races remaining during the Gold Rush on September 21 & 22.
Pruitt won his heat on Friday, but Fietzek did the same the next night.
Another close point chase going
into the final two races is in the ECAR Pro Stock class. Elko’s George
Quintana went into this past race by one point, but Quintana won both
nights. Spring Creek charger Brian Thorp, the defending champion, needed two
victories to take the point lead, but Quintana posted wins number six and
seven at Summit this year, while Thorp finished second and third in the two
nights of racing. This will all come to a head during the Gold Rush event.
Thorp lost three markers to Quintana and is four overall. The two combatants
divided wins in the two heat races on Friday.
Elko teenager Geoffrey Bullock romped to his eighth
Gen-X feature victory here this season, and has a 17-point lead over
runner-up driver Cody Maier. All Bullock needs on the final weekend is to
start both races to be crowned 2007 champion. Thorp won his heat race,
making his first Gen-X action in several years. The next night Thorp swept
both his heat and the feature. Bullock followed Thorp for second and was
able to add another point to his season total over Maier.
Dustin Greenwood captured his fourth ECAR Pure Stock
feature. He did likewise in the heat race. Former Pro Stock champ Bernie
Sethaler finished second in the feature, but lost a point in the standings
to current leader Greenwood, but Sethaler took to back again on Saturday as
the veteran driver won his second feature of the season.
Winnemucca’s Chad Farstveet is the current state of
Nevada IMCA Modified point leader and must like racing in Elko. He nabbed
his second in a row here, fourth this season. Former three-time track
champion, Elko’s Corey Steensen finished second, followed by Randy Artz,
Cory Sample and Wade Taylor. Friday heat winners were Farstveet, Sample and
Bobby Steensen. Current Summit point leader Taylor claimed his third victory
of the season, ahead of Farstveet.
